The ECRI Institute published its annual listing  of  the 10 top technology hazards.  This 2011 listing  provides a guide for prioritizing patient safety initiatives.   Each hazard includes a description of the problem, recommendations for a plan of action and helpful resources.

What is the Safety Performance for CPOE Systems?

Various studies have attempted to measure the safety performance of computerized provider order entry software.  These have produced mixed results.  The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality Patient Safety Network  has developed a Patient Safety Primer on  Computerized Provider Order Entry.    This primer describes the evidence on effectiveness.

This primer provides

Background:  a brief discussion of the key concepts in CPOE.

Evidence of Effectiveness:  a summary of the literature on the effectiveness of CPOE.

Implementation Issues:   Included a table on unintended consequences.

Health IT: The Road to ‘Meaningful Use’
