Cultural Competence, An Ongoing Quest

June 28, 2010

The July – August 2010 issue of Health Progress has a special section on Diversity.  The articles in this section highlight the integral role that diversity plays in Catholic health ministry.    As stated in the article Cultural Competence: An Ongoing Quest, “we are called to engage and respond to the whole person, an experience potentially rich and inevitably diverse.”

In the article Six Months and Counting: Is Your Hospital Ready for The Joint Commissions’s New Standards for Culturally-Competent Care?,  Mark Crawford describes some helpful tools such as the Health Research and Education Trust Toolkit (www.hret-disparities.org).  This toolkit provides very practical information on how to collect and manage race, ethnicity and primary language data.

Other articles in this issue focus on benchmarking  and case studies  that describe challenges and best practices.   The complete issues is available at http://www.chausa.org/2010_Annual_Index.aspx.  You will need to scroll down to locate the July – August 2010 issue.
